How do I apply for Homestead Exemption?

Please print the Homestead Exemption application form, complete the application and bring copies of the following documents to apply:

  • Copy of the Driver's License reflecting the address of the property you are claiming Homestead Exemption as well as your spouse's Driver's License
  • Copy of vehicle registrations, all vehicles need to be registered at this address
  • Copy of the Warranty Deed
  • If you own a home in another county or state, we will need a letter from that county stating you do not have a homestead on that property
  • If divorced, we will need a copy of the Divorce Decree

You can apply in person at the Tax Commissioner's Office or print a form and mail it to the office. If mailing must be postmarked on or before April 1st, only USPS postmarked will be accepted as proof of the April 1st deadline.


What paperwork do I need to provide in order to apply for a disability exemption?

In addition to the additional documents listed on the application checklist that you need to file for the Homestead Exemption, you must provide two doctors' letters or one doctor's letter and Social Security award letter stating 100% disabled and unable to be gainfully employed.

What if I am a new resident of Henry County and haven't received a property tax bill?

Property tax bills are mailed out by mid-September to the homeowner as of January 1.  You may also obtain a copy online. 




What happens if my property tax is not paid in full by the November due date?

Interest will accrue each month and a 5% penalty is added every 120 days after the due date with a maximum penalty of 20%.

When are the property tax sales?

The Henry County Tax Commissioners Office holds judicial-in-rem tax sales the first Tuesday of the month.  These tax sales are held at 10:00am at 140Henry Parkway McDonough, GA.

How do I change the mailing address on my property tax bill?

Please contact the Tax Assessor's Office for all mailing address changes 770-288-7999 opt. #1 or Henry County Tax Assessors.

Must I file for homestead every year?

You only file once as long as you live in the same house.

I'm 62 years old why am I still paying schools taxes?

If you are 62 by January 1 you can file for additional reduction of your assessed value towards school tax.  Once you have applied and been approved for one of these age exemptions, the exemption will continue to increase at 65, 68 and 70. If you become ineligible or move you must reapply.
